Ryuji Nishikawa (6th generation)

We attended a regular performance by the Nishikawa Koryuza troupe of Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo.

It was our first time experiencing this traditional puppetry, and we enjoyed three performances: Sanbaso, Tokaidochu Hizakurige, and a modern dance piece.

The explanations during the show were clear and engaging, making it an enjoyable introduction to the world of Kuruma Ningyo.

These regular performances are led by Ryuji Nishikawa, who is working to revitalize the local community through this traditional art.

After the show, we had the chance to touch the puppets and hear directly from him about the appeal of Kuruma Ningyo.

Born into a Family of Traditional Performers

Born in 1996 as the son of the fifth-generation master Nishikawa Koryu, Ryuji grew up surrounded by the world of traditional performing arts.

As a child, he played with the wooden wheeled platform used in Kuruma Ningyo performances. However, he did not initially plan to follow this path.

He attended a boarding school and led a busy student life filled with activities such as swimming, basketball, painting, ballet, and piano.

At that time, he hoped to become a childcare worker.

Entering the World of Kuruma Ningyo

At the age of 20, he entered the world of Kuruma Ningyo at the invitation of his father.

In 2018, he took the name Nishikawa Ryugyoku, a stage name given to those who will eventually inherit the title of Koryu.

To learn the fundamentals of puppetry, he trained at the Awaji Ningyo Theater in Hyogo Prefecture.

Today, he continues to refine his skills while learning from his father.

In 2022, he expanded his activities by performing alongside Kyogen actor Motoya Izumi.

Later, in December 2025, he officially took the name Nishikawa Ryuji.

Sharing Tradition Through Social Media

Like many young people today, he also has a modern side.

He studies performances on YouTube and enjoys spending his days off resting.

During the pandemic, he launched a YouTube channel to share the魅力 of Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo.

He also uses social media to present this traditional art in a more approachable way.

Since 2023, he has started regular performances led by younger members of the troupe, working to increase awareness.
