“A hundred years ago, Mojiko was one of the most exciting places in Japan.”
That’s how Mayumi Hadano describes the town she loves.
Originally from Shimonoseki in neighboring Yamaguchi Prefecture, Mayumi studied cultural heritage at university before spending many years working in the wedding industry. After getting married, she moved to Mojiko and has since become deeply involved in the community. Today, she works as a local guide, teaches history courses, and participates in community revitalization projects.
What Mayumi shares with visitors goes far beyond the area’s famous sightseeing spots. She introduces the everyday side of the city, from local markets and shopping streets to tucked-away neighborhood bars where residents gather after work.
On this journey, you’ll explore Kokura and Mojiko with Mayumi, discovering the history, culture, and everyday life of this historic port town overlooking the Kanmon Strait, the waterway that separates Japan’s main islands of Honshu and Kyushu.

Our first stop is Uozumi Saketen, a beloved local liquor store. One of the unwritten rules of kakuuchi is simple: don’t stay too long. Enjoy a drink, then move on to the next place. Raise another glass, then continue on again.
Before long, conversations start with the people standing beside you, and you may find yourself sharing a drink with someone you’ve only just met. These spontaneous encounters are part of what makes Kitakyushu’s drinking culture so special.

Soak in the Port Town Night and Enjoy Mojiko Ramen

The final stop is one of Mayumi’s favorite local ramen shops. Although it’s also a tonkotsu (pork-bone) ramen, Mojiko’s style has its own character, distinct from the famous ramen of Hakata or nearby Kokura.
